help pls - foam in eye....
« on: January 11, 2012, 16:09 »
Hi, I have noticed yesterday that our bantum hen has what looks like foam in her right eye and the area near the corner of her eye where the foam is looks swollen.

Does anyone have any idea what this might be and what I should/could do about it?

My hubby is very much of the attitude, they are just chickens, so therefore vets visits are not something he will be keen on, plus pennies etc. but im very worried about it :o(

Foamy eyes are usualy one of the tell-tale signs of a respiratory infection.

You will need antibiotics, so at least one trip to the vet wil be required I'm afraid.

When you tkae your sick hen, you will need to tell the vet how many chickens you have, and he (or she) should give you enough of the antibiotic to treat the whole flock.

Good luck :)

oh no :(

its going to be very difficult for us to take her until 2 weeks time, if it is a respiratory infection would this be ok or is it something she needs to see a vet right away for?

sorry but she needs a vet as soon as possible, if it is mycoplasma then it highly infectious. You need enough to treat all your hens.
Staffies are softer than you think.

brilliant news, it is always handy to have a local poultry friendly vet. When you go could you please ask them if they mind us putting their details on here for anybody else who may need them, thanks.
Good luck with the diagnosis - please do keep us informed xx  :)

vet appt booked for tomoz (fri) at 5:30pm.  It will be anywhere from £15 - £29 for the consultation depending on how long your with the vet, then for antibiotics, for 2 birds the lady I spoke to said I would only need 20mg or maybe a bit less so will only be about £7.  Not bad I thought.......

Fingers crossed it is a simple case of give the antibiotics and she will be fine again

I will ask them and let you know when I get back  :)

well back from the vets...... she thinks it is a respiratory infection & has given us antibiotics. she gave her an injection & then for the next 6 days we have to syringe a dose in once a day, so that will be interesting as dolly doesn't like to be handled!!

and on the plus side it only cost £21, we were expecting to be at least £50 lighter!!

thanks all for the advice  :)

different vets prescribe different antibiotics - there are hundreds that are licensed for poultry. Usually the most common ones are Baytril, tylan, aureomycin and deneguard all of which are broad spectrum antibiotics.
Did the vet give you any time span before you can eat the eggs?
