Omlet Cube
« on: January 03, 2012, 11:58 »
Hi All,

Happy new year!

I decided after nightmare upon nightmare of infestations of red mite to bite the bullet and but a eglu cube.
It will be delivered later this month but was worried about transfer of mites from my wooden coop to the new eglu. Are there any tips on making sure I don't transfer mites?

Unfortunately due to the size of the omlet cube I will have to reduce my hen numbers but they have a massive run anyway. It's just the size inside the house. I managed to get the eglu cube in green with Run for £500 which was much cheaper than £700 it's now advertised for!

Thanks in advance

Andy

No need to worry to be honest...

Even if some many to make it across, just clean it out a couple of times in the first fort night and wash it out and they will be gone.

I had a really bad problem and havnt had a single mite after the first week.  Just moved them in,  totaly cleaned it out and replaced bedding a couple of times in the first 2 weeks and havnt had a single mite since...
I hate signatures but love irony

Sprinkle some Diatom in the droppings tray, on the ends of the roosting bars and anywhere else you think could provide a hiding place.

and in the nest boxes on and below their nesting material.
When you are washing out your cube could you do it away from their run so that any red mites washed out won't come crawling back again.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks to you all,

I'm hoping that this will give eradication a real chance of working.
The mites almost made me give up keeping chickens which is a big shame given the pleasure and enjoyment they give to us.

I will probably need another cube in the future. Where can you find them second hand?

Thanks again!

try ebay, pre-loved and the omlet forum as they sometimes have them second hand. How many hens do you have?

The Cube would take 8 hybrids comfortably. I've got 6 and there's loads of room.
You will be VERY pleased with your purchase.  :D
