I'm off!
« on: January 02, 2012, 18:59 »

I sowed 18 broad beans (aquadulce) in individual pots in the frost free greenhouse this afternoon.

(Still waiting for the cells to arrive for the onions -- the ones I have are massive  )

So what has your first sowing been of?

Hi SSB... I'm growing aquadulce for the first time this year and the packet says Mar-May, are you setting them away to plant out at a later date??  :)

My packet says you can sow indoors or out from November onwards.

I am growing these under cover as it is difficult to protect plants at the plot form the wind at this time in the year and they tend to go black and fall over (cloches just get blown away)

I shall harden them off and set them out around mid March/ early April depending on the weather, and sow some more then too

Some strange seed packets some of you have got. ;)

You can sow these hardier types just about any time.

Except for too early for over-wintering, because as Sunny says, the winds ruin them if they are too tall.

Probably means March one year to May the next year!

Aquadulce are the standard over-winter BB.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Just re-checked, Gobs, youre spot on, they can be sown Jan, feb, September, October, November & December.
The pack states that they can be sown direct but would the ground not be way too cold for germination if planted direct now??

These guys germinate at some unbelievably low tempretures, I do not know exactly how much for soil. The bigger problem tends to be that something eats them, especially in the cold season. and the birds and whonot dig and pull up the just germinated shoots.

Some of my lot self-seeded. I let them be, as nothing needs the space now. Not even overwintering ones. Some got eaten, but the rest are fine as yet.

Now the soil is warm enough yet, if you have no rodent problems, could try, but as colder weather is speculated soonish to come, the young shoots might get frozen just on emerging. So outdoor sowings I would leave now for a while.

I would just keep them in pots until they have the first leaves showing and then plant them out, or at least put them outside. Letting them get leggy and soft is the usual reason for failure. Mice will steal them whether they are inside or out.
