Appreciative of advice,sane or daft!
« on: January 01, 2012, 11:14 »
Happy new year all!
We've been really lucky in obtaining a 10x8ft greenhouse no broken glass, complete with shelving etc :-D  we are chuffed to bits!
Now,firstly, would it be more sensible to leave it as non concrete underneath? How do I level it without serious earth works on my part?
Secondly.....nettles and some sort of creeper that looks like ivy. My lovely chickens are busy with these annoyances at the top of the garden, but how do we get rid? Piggin things :-/
We do have some raised veg beds for the kids, and some old guttering nailed to the fence that I grow herbs and salad bits in but id appreciate any and all advice on getting my garden working for us
Thanks in advance one and all x x x
My chickens probably make more sense than I do so forgive me ;-)

i am far from a builder but thought i would give myself some proper D.I.Y so..

i just measured the diameter of my greenhouse and cut a spade width across the string line and a spade depth down, i filled it with rubble and cement 3 bags of sand to half a bag of cement..then layed that in with the rubble and levelled it up with a spirit level (dabbing it ontop of the wet concrete) ..i got that pretty level then *EDIT when its dried* i got myself 20 breeze blocks and cemented them in ontop but that mixture was 2 bags of sand to half a cement and the consistency of a slushy (seriously the only thing i could think of at this hour lol)..and i layed 1 row of these  (it wasnt  first class brickwork)...but it was a secure and solid foundation..then just bolted my greenhouse to this ....all in all it took me 2 hours to do foundations and about the same time laying the breeze blocks...thats my accomplishment for 2011 anyway lol

hope this helps.

P.S this leaves your internal area all soil, which you can either plant direct into or do with what you please.

if you're reluctant to build solid foundations (or for others finding this thread, whose allotment rules don't allow them), it's possible to dig shallow trenches, firm down the bottoms, and lay concrete blocks on sand, either on their side or for more stability on their broad side. The greenhouse can go straight on them or onto timber - the letter is sometimes better as most greenhouses have a little downwards lip along the base

second issue. Try searching for 'weeds'  :) good luck!

Do bolt your greenhouse down though, whichever foundations you decide on.
