Poundland Bargains
« on: December 30, 2011, 16:30 »
Just been to the Poundland in town and they seem to have their gardening stock in. Have some really good deals it would seem on things like Potato and Tomato grow sacks (the tarpaulin variety), Swift seed potatoes (8 tubers), Onion and Shallot sets in 300g bags, 1.5m cloche tunnels and  5m x 1.2m D.P.M. all for a pound funnily enough.

Have had a look at the website, and it seems that there is a much broader range available, so will take a look at the big 'out of town' store tomorrow to see what else I can grab. Here's a link if anyone wants to take a peek...

http://www.poundland.co.uk/product-range/a-z/grow-your-own--potato-grow-bag/

Also, on a side note I noticed that Wilkos seem to have their seed on display now, and seems very reasonably priced.

Doesn't that break their pricing strategy?  :D

Some years ago, I spent a week in Worksop with a friend, and she took me into a Poundland.  They were selling these scrapbooking kits and sheets of peel offs.

They were a really good bargain.  Anyway, she said to the assistant, do you have any more of these?  Yes, he said, I've got a whole box left of each.  I'll have them she said.  We got to the checkout and it came to £99     She gave them her credit card and they said "sorry, we don't take cards!"

So we had to stand there while she searched her bag for £99!    It was so funny!   :)

Hesse,

Pentland Javelin seed potatoes
Red Baron onion sets
Golden gourmet shallot sets
2 bluberry plants 'Patriot'
Fresia bulbs
Secatuers for Glasgow Guy (I have quality ones! :tongue2:)
Rubble sacks for starting on 'the mess' corner
Water retaining crystals for containers
Blood  fish and bone stuff
A £1 cloche  (seems unlikely to last, or stay in situ?)
2 packs of 3 arc shaped canes
Pea netting

They didn't have any protective fleece or weed suppressing fabric in stock or I would have spent more.

Actually, I was quite restrained.  Threre were loads of other stuff including seed trays, flower bulbs and seed kits I could have bought.

GG

I spent the same the day before yesterday!!  How funny...maybe we should call it the £14 shop from now on?

I bought:
Pea netting
Peat pots
Plant pots
Seed trays
Blood, bone and ugh!
Tomato bags/pots
Various flower bulb/tubers
and I think that was it.  Oh, and some string in a tin.

I wanted lots of the membrane stuff to go along the paths under the wood chip I'm praying I get given but mine too didn't have any instock.

The cloche thing I got out of the bag and sort of constructed it in the store ;o) bet they thought I was a mentalist (not far wrong!) and I then rejected it as I didn't think it would last long out on the plot.

Now all the above was purchased because of reading this thread the other day...so I blame YOU LOT!

...but I think I'll keep going back and checking for the membrane stuff  ;)

The membrane is very cheap, thin, plastic stuff - I bought some but it didn't last the season.  If you want it to do a decent job it will probably be a false economy.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Oooh, right then. I'll forget there and try somewhere better. Thank you Yorkie. xx

Yorkie is that the 'Mulch Sheet' that they sell, or the 'Weed Control Sheet'? If it's the latter, I agree wholeheartedly, as I bought some of this off eBay a few weeks back not realising where it originally came from, and the quality was very poor to the point it's virtually see-through. Not to mention I paid nearly three times the original value, I was less than happy!

The 'Mulch sheet' looks like a much thicker sheet being plastic rather than fabric. Would it be any good as a very temporary weed barrier whilst I just get the shape and plan of my plot dug out from it's current weedy state, and then maybe consider something a little more robust from next year on?
