Help with large pils
« on: December 23, 2011, 16:56 »
Beano, our Dandy Dinmont was off his food, being sick and generally under the weather so we took him to the vets.  He was diagnosed with a mouth infection and give an antibotic injection.  All good.

The vet gave us a packet of tablets to give him one twice a day.  Bearing in mind he has a mouth infection and feels sick how the heck do I give him tablets as big as an old 1/2 penny?  I tried four times putting them in his mouth and rubbing his neck but he just held the tablet in his mouth and then pushed it out again when I had stopped.  When I finally got him to take it wrapped in a piece of chockolate he was promptly sick.

Any suggestions please?

Difficult one that, given his size and condition. Not used to small dogs so no help from me I'm afraid.

Our lab is the easiest. You just get her excited and chuck them, and they go down in one and she is asking for more.

Good luck.

Can you crush it into his food? That is always assuming he gets dog meat. Or if he likes cheese you can crush the tablet down and mix it with crumbled cheese to make a sort of ball, or wrap it in a slice of cold meat and offer it? Our Buster (Terrier) was always very good at taking medication, until latterly when he got quite difficult to treat.

You can chop the tablet into four with a very sharp knife which should be easier to administer.  As others have said try to hide the pieces in his favourite treats.  Good luck and keep us up to date on his progress.

I am very sad today, last night Beano died, it was very distressing for me but thankfully I think he was out of it most of the time.

By the time I got him to the emergency vet he had gone.

Oh, I am so very sorry, how terrible for you.  The loss of a dog is so hard.

Thinking of you.

I am so sorry. What an awful thing to happen, at this time of the year especially.
