Butternut squash seeds.... a frugal step too far?
« on: December 11, 2011, 20:22 »
A couple of weeks ago I thought you'd all laugh at me for saving the beans out of the runnerbean plants left on my new plot.  But it seems quite a few of you save seeds from them.

Well today we've had butternut squash for tea and washed and saved the seeds. Do you think they'll grow and produce fruits next year, or shall I throw them away?

I've only just discovered that if you just slice the squash down the centre, scrape out the stringy seedy bit you can roast the thing whole with the skin on!  I've been peeling the blighters all this time.  Some even claim to eat the skin, like a baked potato.  I sprinkled S&P on and a little dusting of cinnamon before baking for half an hour. DELISH!  I'm definitely growning these next year... has anyone had much success with squashes. x

Not a good idea to save seeds from these as they readily cross pollinate with other squashes and pumpkins.....you could get some weird BNS from saved seed...

Squashes are notoriously promiscuous, so it will be a case of maybe you'll grow something worthwhiel, may be not.

But you can raoast and eat the seeds like pumpkin seeds  :D

If it was a shop bought one, you are reasonably sure of growing a butternut rather than a mutant! They are grown in such big fields that there's not much chance of them crossing with anything IMO

But as the others have said, allotment or garden grown ones rarely breed true because of cross pollination.

Hadn't thought it might be a shop bought one... sorry  ???

I have grown seed from supermarket squash which are grown in large fields of the same variety and unlikely to be crossed with others.
I have also grown from home grown seed , no major disasters and all good to eat .

That said i did have one ?? butternut that had a dark green skin when ripe but it was still A1 to eat.  ;)

Ive had good butternut squash coming up "wild" in the veg (wild as in I grew them the year before, and didn't clear them away until the frost split them and scattered their contents).

Perhaps not a good idea if you grow other pumpkins/squashes nearby.

So if growing from seed taken from squash bought in supermarket when do you start them? I guess about the end of March in compost in the green house.

By the way we cut it up into chunks and roast it round the meat when having a roast.

Made a start have beds established but moved in too late for serious planting. We shall see what 2015 brings.

We roast our butternut squash a la Jamie Oliver (Naked Chef Page 148) with
coriander seeds
Dried oregano
fennel seeds
dried red chilles
salt
pepper
garlic
olive oil.

Grind all to a paste and spread it on cut sides before roasting.
Fab-u-lous darling.
I started out with nothing.....and I've still got most of it.

I don't start mine until Mid April because they grow so quickly once germinated OMG, and the weather is not warm enough to plant them out until the end of May/beginning of June.
