Red chicken skin?
« on: October 03, 2007, 22:25 »
Hi all,

I recently bought 3 hybrids from a guy who had them on his allotment.

I'm afraid that good sense gave way to impatience and despite them being slightly featherless (he said they were moulting - I think it may have been bullying from some of the other hens in the run with them as all of their feathers are coming back in abundance within a week) I bought them and installed them in their new home.

One of the hens, the largest, was featherless on her neck, chest and vent area and her 'back end' looked bright pink.  The other two were similarly bald but their skin was a healthy pink.  The area is more pronounced than on the other two, too, however she is much larger than the other two birds.

Their poos seem to be all different types of colours too, but I had put this down to a more varied diet since I have had them as the previous owner kept them in a bleak run with nothing to stimulate them and no vegitation.

I intend to take them to the vet to be checked out as have read the sticky topics on poos and other ailments but I wondered if there may be a reason that Penny's skin is redder than the others.

That'll teach me for buying cheap chooks

just give her a couple weeks on ur diet and she may well improve greatly . make sure you treat them for mites as this may well be the cause of the inflamation and bad feathers. if no improvement in this time then vet her . you could also try the purple lotion ... cant remember its name for now .. anty will tho
still alive /............

Thanks Munty.

I treated them all for mites at the weekend and need to do them again for a second go tomorrow.

The redness did go down after munching on a boatload of chafer grubs she found (must have been about half a pound of 'em) when I was hoeing off weeds at the weekend - could it be a protien issue?

Will wait to see what Auntie says too  :D

In the States we call the Blue spray: Blue Coat, used for treating scrapes and wounds on horses mostly, but we use it for alot of things on all animals.  I'm sure it's the same thing, just a differant name.  :?

The one I got after Aunty mentioned purple spray, is NAF Aloe Vera Purple Spray (mind you, if I didn't know it worked, I'd be a bit wary of something called NAF!!!!! lolol)
