Sad 'n Sorry Cedar Greenhouse
« on: November 01, 2011, 17:09 »
I have an old Alton cedar greenhouse that has suffered due to lack of maintenance and so now needs to have some of the cedar bits replaced - but the cost of the replacements are astronomic!!! does anyone have any good ideas for repairs - I am pretty nifty at woodwork so I can make up parts, but I am not sure of the wood that I should use etc.  It is not the complete sections that needs to be replaced - just some of the bars in the section.  Any ideas for getting economic cedar?

I guess any hardwood would be OK, but hardwood isn't going to be cheap. You could try an architectural salvage merchants, but would it be as cheap (and a lot easier) to find a similar secondhand greenhouse on fleabay and do a cut and shut job?  :)

Would treated lumber not work? You say you have just small sections to fix, so treated pcs might not be too noticeable.

Go have a squint round your local DIY store --- a single length od hradwood shouldn't set you back a fortune, and you might even get some the right width to start with.

Look in the section realted to decking too, as there is usually hard wood there as well as traeted pine/deal

I think I'd make it out of treated timber and then once made, let it soak for a few days in some cuprinol before fitting it.
