A peeling with an 'eye' will grow if it isn't rotted down properly -- my Dad had one grew in his rose bed, and it gave a rather good crop too

My heap seems to get hot enough to kill them, as they nover come back to life from the thick brown cake I'm left with  :D

Yup, they do.... it was a common method of growing potatoes without wasting precious food during the war  ;)

Trouble is I've always got spud peelings in my kitchen compost bin, and I'm not sure I really want to stick that under my runner beans in case it starts sprouting spuds.

why not "kill" it first by putting the peelings into a freezer - they'll go a bit mushy when thawed but at least they shouldn't sprout  ;)

Well I've never tried it personally, but I have seen people on here saying they can grow spuds from peelings :)

pour boiling water over them, that will kill them off and stop them growing. It's no real effort either, as you will need to drain the boiled water off your cooked potatoes anyway, just drain it over the peelings, job done!  :)
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

Sorry, life's too short. By the time I pour away the boiling water my peels have long been in the compost bin. Since the advent of recycling I seem to spend half my life either washing, sorting or filing away different categories of rubbish into different containers, and I draw the line at 'processing' spud peelings before filing them into the compost bin :)
