Turnips - Whats happened to them?
« on: October 22, 2011, 21:10 »
Can anyone tell me what ever happened to BIG 'snaggers'? They all seem to be little varieties these days about the size of tennis balls.  :)
I remember years ago, they were the size of footballs, I even used to make my 'Halloween' lantern out of them with half of a 6" candle inside, they were that big.
Does anyone know if you can still get them these days and if so what is the variety called?
Thanks as always peeps...  :)

Thats right Ice, Turnips, at least that's what we called them when I was a young'un, swede's were unheard of.
I know theres plenty of varieties of swede around, but what about the traditione English turnip?

It's not an English variety, but the Giant Limousin Turnips from Realseeds grow big, like swedes :)

I much prefer the milder taste of swede, turnips seem quite bitter unless they are picked when tiny :)

I can remember having enormous swedes too, with candles in (We never had pumpkins around when I was little)

I have trouble growing swedes of modest proportion, so doubt somehow if I could manage a huge one
