chilli plants in winter
« on: October 21, 2011, 11:36 »
I know people fetch chilli plants in to overwinter them but i was just wondering........

Would it be possible to grow a chilli from seed now and grow it as a house plant?

Has anyone tried this?

If not i may and if they have and failed, then i won't.

Why don't you try it and tell us? I should think the plant will grow fine, but the fruiting might not be great.

Well i was thinking of growing it on a windowsill.
Not sure if they're self fertile though?

I'll see what responses i get and if there are none sying it didn't work then i'll give it a go.

As with any plant if you provide the optimum growing conditions they should thrive. Light being essential for growth and for chillies you will need to provide the correct temperature. I will be starting mine in winter and intend using a T5 fleuresent grow light, without this i would expect slow and week growth in which case you may as well wait until early spring. In my humble opinion

I was thinking of growing it as a permanent indoor plant, not bringing it on for the greenhouse  ;)

I grew one of the little chillis (Pretty in Purple) overwinter on the sunny, kitchen windowledge, and it flowered and fruited indoors.

It only grows to about 18in tall but it is indeed pretty, with purple flowers and fruit  :) so I'd say it can be done - just don't try the big plants ;)

I think you could do Superchillis on a windowsill as well, as far as size goes. Every year they give me a fantastic crop and they're lovely chillis.

I grow all my chillies indoors as houseplants (loads of south facing windows),  out of five I started growing in 2010 three made it over last winter, the other two died when I trimmed them right back and repotted them as is recommended - I'll be a bit more careful this year, although I do have nine plants on the go now  :)

Just noticed a similar question below. I have a new chilli plant this year. Do they survive until next year if brought indoors now. I probably would have composted it, but if they re-fruit next year then I will keep it.

Yes, bring them in, give them a prune, and water just enough to keep them alive.
Unless kept somwhere warm and sunny they will drop their leaves, but often regrow in the spring. It's not guaranteed but there is a good chance :)
