Frost and beetroot
« on: October 19, 2011, 14:44 »
Had a warning - Hereford/Worces frost early tomorrow, first one for weeks here.

Beetroot patch - pulled some up and noted some are creamy coloured all from a boltardy packet!!  are these edible? - cooked them but they don't smell like normal beetroot.

Interested to hear comments.

They do not smell like normal beetroot but do they look like beetroot?

If suspicious they are better left than you poisoned.

A photo would help.

The sort of frost we get now do no harm to beet. Only when we get prolonged hard frosts like last December do they freeze and go soft.

Pull a bit of earth over them to protect them.

Thanks Salmo,  they look like normal beetroot,  the leaves look like beetroot leaves, but have noticed they are not red stalked but green.

I quite often get a few white beets growing from Boltardy seed. They taste the same as the red ones. :)

I still have a row of beetroot in the ground. I think I'll cloche them tomorrow, just to be on the safe side.

I just leave beetroot in the ground until we want to eat it.

They were fine last year despite the snow etc  :)
