Help - Bugs in my Pantry
« on: October 18, 2011, 10:44 »
I've discovered these bugs are everywhere in my pantry!  They are brown and a little smaller than 'thunderbugs'.
Any advice on how to get rid of them, please - or do I just keep eating them...

They may be weevils - do you have flour in there?
If they are, you will have to get rid of everything that they have got into and scrub out the whole pantry. And believe me they get everywhere! Check open packets and cereals/ pasta carefully, just wipe tins etc.
Do not miss any!
As you may guess, I have been there  :tongue2:

They could be flour mites.

If you google Flour Mite theres lots of info there about getting rid, if it is them :)

Everyone must get them from time to time, so dont panic

Warm summers really propagate these pests. We've recently had to clear out all our storage cupboards of older biscuits, crackers, oatmeal, flour, breadcrumbs, etc because we had so many due to our hot summer  >:( Most things were in jars or sealed bags but the bugs can chew through bags and cause havoc; the jarred ones were waiting for us to open the lids and out they flew.

and they bite little round holes in paper packets too --- I try to keep everything in sealed plastic containers now since they arrived in our lives.

The worst culprit for importing them to our house is chickpea flour (gram flour)

Or they could have been put there by MI6 or Rupert Murdoch

I think I managed to introduce them to my kitchen in a bag of corn that I had for the hens and they quickly spread everywhere.

Organic stoneground flour from artisan mills should be used quickly for this reason too

My mum was always getting them & we couldn't find out how to get rid of them then we realised she had lots of salt dough ornaments & plaques. She got rid of them all & the bugs went too.
