New to having chickens, so what I would like to know is there anything that I need to do  besides wash the eggs before I eat them or but them in the fridge?

No, you don't need to wash the eggs either.  :)

We just wipe the dirty ones a bit.  Wetting them isn't good for the shells  ;)

Don't bother with the fridge either.  Shell keeps them fresh and you don't need to boil them for as long! ;)

There's an interesting discussion running here:
http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=84652.0
about whether you need to refrigerate eggs.

If your coop is well designed with your nest boxes away from the perches, and if you manage your chickens so they don't sleep in or near the nest boxes, then there is no reason for the eggs to be soiled.

Therefore you don't need to wash them before you use them. :)
