Evolving carrot flies
« on: October 07, 2011, 21:20 »
I grew early nantes carrots in a plastic tub early this season very successfully, so spurred on by that I planted French sphericals in the green planter below. I understand that carrot fly are not great flyers, but that planter is 22 inches off the ground, and the devils got at 'em! >:(
The other planter was manufactured for next season, but I'm thinking I'll need higher sides on it! ???

24" is usually the recommended minimum, don't forget they can glide on a strong wind.

Fleece or Enviromesh is more effective.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The only thing about a fixed lid of fleece is that it probably won't be sufficiently flexible to allow the carrot foliage to grow upwards.  Make sure there's enough room for the foliage.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I've seen some very neat planter covers made of hoops and mesh

I reckon a foot high straight sided with hinges and catch! :) All recycled material, of course! 8)

Only had to buy the hinges, all ready for a fleece now. Roll on next season! :D
