No - they aren't safe! All mine got wiped out this time last year as they all head for cover from the cold.

Its always wise to cover, even if the 'season' is over they can still hit you for a blinder

Silly question perhaps but how do you know if you've got carrot fly?

Small black tunnels in the carrot. It's actually the carrot fly larvae.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

So I won't kow, DD until I pull them? I've got a couple of rows I put in late (Autumn King)and they're  only 6" high and I haven't thinned them yet. Should I pull one to see?

the carrot leaves tend to go yellow if you have the fly so that may be a sign to look for

By all means have a look, to be honest, they're not going to grow much more, maybe a little, but not a lot!

Not necessarily the case. On the first year on my current plot, I skipped 6 barrow loads of carrots that were outwardly very healthy.

Is it worth cloching them to get more growth or should I just whip them out and plant something else? They are still tiny. Gardeners' World planted Autumn King at the same time I did so I assumed I'd get something!!!

Damn, I was also hoping that they'd gone. My cat keeps leaping off the fence and belly-flopping onto my carrot fleece, she's torn 3 pieces in as many months  >:(!

My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

Oops - I removed my (not very) carrot-fly-proof fence the other day thinking they'd be well over and done with. Not going to put it back on though - such a kerfuffle. Fingers firmly crossed.
