i'm in surrey/london on quite heavy soil. can i still plant carrots now for winter? what kind?

Autumn King if you are sharpish, my packet says sow til august and I did last week

You may be lucky but bear in mind that carrots generally do best on lighter soils.

Not quite a winter crop (unless you have a greenhouse maybe) but an "overwintering" variety to give carrots early next year-hopefully

I planted both autumn king and these early nantes 10 days ago.

Did this towards the end of August last year and had some lovely carrots in the spring... no carrot fly probs either

Interesting KC, we were told down here, that the last week in July worked as well! So they went in then - a 50' row...

They're about a couple of inches high currently, but there was a lot of fly about last time. The row, well away from the 'sacrificial row' still seems to thrive, and I wonder when I'm going to bite the bullet... The biggest top showing diameters there are about 2", so they may be OK...

Ho hum...
