« on: August 29, 2011, 18:53 »
HI there, is there such a thing as white mites? We have noticed these very tiny critters on our skin after we have picked up the girls. They are only just big enouggh to be seen.

Any help please

They sound like lice.

Are you sure it's not red mite that you've seen? They are a very light grey in colour and only become red after they have fed.

Well, they can't live on us, but their bite can give you dermatitis.

I always keep a pair of "chicken" wellies liberally sprayed on the outside with anti-mite spray. I now wear these into the coop (trousers tucked in) and not my "house" shoes. After having a particularly bad mite infestation (thanks Hillfooter for your guidance, it seems to be working), I never wear the same shoes into the house. Any little itch and I'm frantically looking to see if I can see a mite on me. Bear in mind I have long hair which frequently brushed the nest boxes whilst collecting eggs - all tied back out of the way now. Yuk!!!
