Which hens lay the BIGGEST eggs (double yolker's!) ?
« on: August 28, 2011, 18:51 »
I have done my hatching for this year but am already getting impatient and trying to decide which breed to go for next year  :D

At the moment I have a sussex star and two speckledy's who are great layer's of medium sized eggs, and I have got some cuckoo maran and silver laced wyandotte pullets, yet to lay.

I know size shouldn't matter  ;), but I do like a nice big egg and double yolker's are even better, I was thinking maybe Barnevelder??
I dog, 1 cat, 1 horse, 1 Light Sussex, 2 Speckledys, 2 Cuckoo Maran:)

you may like big double yolkers but they are not good for the chickens. Each hen is hatched with her full quota of eggs and double yolkers uses up two of these in one go so she will stop laying quicker. Larger eggs can also get stuck or even break inside the hen leading to internal infections, again not a good thing for her.
Hens will lay bigger eggs in their second year so I'm afraid patience is a virtue in this case.
Staffies are softer than you think.

you can always have pretend double yolkers - use two yolks and one white (save up your whites to use for meringues) - best of both worlds then  :D

Isn't there a french breed of hen that has been bred to give predominantly double-yolkers?  Are there problems with that breed, a short laying life etc?  Off now to investigate ..... :)

I had heard about the Delaware but couldn't find any suppliers in the UK only the US, but I do like the sound of those.

Not sure about the French breed that you mention Tesni.
