I have always thought of Diatom Earth as  prevention rather than a cure for an existing problem, if the mite do avoid it they will not die.
Continue blitzing the mite with liquid killers until there is no sign of them.

If you have red mite you really need to blitz the house with something stronger. DE may help but will not do the job on its own. Meanwhile your chooks are getting weaker from the red mite attacks. Search for red mite on here and you will get good advice as to what is best to use. :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Use poultry shield weekly until they are clear along side this you can make up Hillfooters slurry if you wish or simply just puff DE into all the nooks and crannies and sprinkle it on the bedding and nest boxes. make sure you pay particular attention to the ends of the roosting perches.

Poultry shield is effective and you do not need to be licensed to use it unlike some other preparations  :).
After a few weeks you will notice the difference and then you can go back to using it once a month as a precaution.
Staffies are softer than you think.

It was recommended to me by poutry shield to use it every 3 days to eradicate red mite and their eggs. It was explained that they reproduce over a 7 day period and it seems to have worked. I will keep treating every 3 days for the next few weeks just to be safe

Yes I'd agree DE on it's own won't rid you of an infestation and a once off insecticde treatment or a regular clean with a detergent (PS is effective as is cheep washing up liquid) every three to 6 days will eventually get on top of them.  The use DE.
