Brown patches on potatoes
« on: August 21, 2011, 13:14 »
Hi all,

I've just dug up may mains and about half are covered with brown splodges!

Are these an issue - if I job them off is the rest of the potato ok to eat?

What about storing them - i'll store them seperately to the unaffected ones but will they last long?

Any and all help gratefully appreciated!

It looks a bit like scab. If it is, you can scrape or peel it off and eat them without worry.

Someone more experienced will have to answer that Dave, I've only ever come across it on earlies, which you don't store. I would think so, but let somone else express an opinion.

Out of interest Dave, what variety are they? They're nice looking potatoes, apart from that.

Definitely potato scab. Superficial only. No problems for storing. I usually get some on my Desiree. Cheers.

Before asking, I wondered Desiree, but they appear redder than THESE.

Hello guys! Because you are all the fountain of knowledge on here, could you tell me what causes scab please? I also have this on my Maris Piper. Looks nasty but the potato itself tasted delicious!  :)

Thanks. Mandy
