Strange Sweet Peppers
« on: August 19, 2011, 13:28 »
Hi,

I have grown sweet peppers before withour any problem however this year I have one plant that is producing purple peppers and another that is producing lime green peppers, does nayone know why this should be happening? I have three plants grown from the same pack of seeds in one grow bag, the first plant is fine but the second plant is producing purple peppers and the third plant lime green peppers.

Hi and welcome!  :D That sounds a bit odd, but there must be a plausible reason for it. What variety of peppers are they?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

The seeds were Kingfisher mixed sweet pepper, I guess the clue could be in the "mixed" although purple and lime green does seem to be a bit extreme!!!

As I've posted here before my packet of Wilkinsons mixed sweet peppers have been very entertaining for the last couple of years!

Tapered ones which started off yellow but then turned red, box peppers some of which went green-yellow, some green-red, and others which went the more familiar green-yellow-red.
They were all perfectly edible and tasty though.  :)

(No lime green or purple yet, but there's always next year!)

Edit: forgot the word "mixed"!

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I guess that answers it.  ;)

Hi mumofstig,

Thanks for the reply, certainly sounds reassuring. Mine look like baby obergines at the moment. I expect you are right about the lime green ones.

Call me tight - they are from Wilkinsons - can't be too bad though the tomatoes, chillies, and Cucumbers have all dobe well in them.  ;)

The ones that look like baby aubergines look exactly like a variety I'm growing this year. They're called Purple Beauty. Wish I had fruit on mine as big as yours though. Out of six plants I've only got one with something on it that's vaguely recognisable as a small pepper.

I think I have got lucky this year, I have to grow them under glass as being in the north I do not get the sun for long enough to grow them on the patio.

Yes, this year's appalling weather has made me start looking longingly at walk-in polytunnels. Maybe with one of those I could even have another try with aubergines, which I've given up on growing outdoors. About the only things that have done well for me this year are onions, garlic and French beans.

Yes I must admit we have only ever managed to get one aubergine to produce over the past couple of years and that only gave one fruit. Have had a bumper crop of cucumbers and as you say the onions and french beans have done very well on the allotment together with the old faithful courgettes and what looks like a heavy crop of pumpkins which we have only grown for a bit of a laugh.
