Nasturtiums for companion planting
« on: August 13, 2011, 20:59 »
As an experiment, this year I tried using nasturtiums as sacrificial companion plants to keep the cabbage whites away from my brassicas. I have a veggie bed that's about 18' X 18' surrounded by a 4' wire fence. I put climbing nasturtiums all the way round, growing up the fence. In the bed I have white, red, savoy cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and calabrese, and so far I've had absolutely no caterpillar damage or signs of eggs on them, only on the nasturtiums. I used no sprays and no netting.

I also had a few red cabbage/calabrese/sprout plants sitting around in my cold frame, because I ran out of space to plant them, and these have been absolutely covered in caterpillars. Maybe it's just coincidence, or maybe it really does work, but I'll be doing it again next year. Anybody else have any good/bad experience with this?

Thats really good to hear.  :D

I used nasturtiums a few years back as a companion plant I honestly can't remember what for I just remember it was something susceptable to blackfly.  Just like you found the nasturtiums were covered and whatever I grew was great.  This is something I will certainly try next year as Ive  been reading a few peoples experiences with nets isnt always fool proof.  Plus I want to grow as oranically as possible so will try anything.

Any other success with other companion planting?

Ive just had a quick look at a book I got recently  - it mentions sage also for repelling cabbage white.  It mentions nasturtiums but nothing about cabbage white so nice discovery  8)

One thing I've been trying is placing a large branch cutting of tomato plant on top of each cabbage head, and it seems to work. The heads need fresh branches each week so that the smell is still strong enough to confuse the butterflies who hover a moment then fly off.

I'd highly recommend you try it first with a few spare brassicas before trying it with your whole crop.
