Passion Fruit vines question
« on: September 21, 2007, 09:19 »
I bought some organic black passionfruit seed to planat this year and I can't decide where to put them.  I have come up with an Idea and I was just wondering If anyone thought it might work.  I have to hanging pots empty on my frount porch so I thought I could plant them in there - some of the vine could hang down and some could climb up the three chains each pot has and I also thought that if I thread some wire between the two chains that this would act as a trellis.

Thoughts?

... I'm not sure that that would work, but only because they are hungry plants and just seem to keep growing in my experience.  We planted a tiny sprig last year and it's now well over 15ft and shows no sign of slowing down!

Thats why I thought of the pots I was hoping it would control the vine - I love passion fruit but I remember from when I was young how nuts they can grow.

Surprisingly, they don't do very well for me at 57degs latitude but I found this for you : http://www2.dpi.qld.gov.au/horticulture/5524.html

Dunno where you are in Oz but, significantly, it says, "To grow passionfruit successfully, you need 70 cm of well drained soil and a frost-free site."

It also talks of rootstock and so growing from seed may not be a complete success.

Thanks for the info - We are in south Australia but is was still interesting to read.  I've been walking around the yard and I really can't come up with some where to plant it - I have really used nearly every nook and crany and the few spots I do have have new fruit tree which probably couldn't handle the climbing vine yet.  Well I have already spent the money on the seed so I might as well give it a go in the pots - whats the worst that can happen - they die and I waste 3 dollars worth of seeds!

Thanks again I will post in the future (with hopefully good news) on how they are going

Thank you.

Australia is 32 times bigger than the UK & we have plenty of variation within the UK regarding planting times, etc.
