white sticky eggs
« on: August 08, 2011, 15:27 »
I was doing some sorting out today, stuff looking a bit brown & salad bolted whilst on holiday.  I had grown some salad in a perspex box, previously used as a gerbil cage, & found in the compost some white round things which were sticky when squashed.  Wondering if anyone could tell me what they are.
I thought they might be slugs but would like some advise. & if they are slugs can I chuck the lot on the composter or would that cause me more sticky problems??

Okay, another one...

Made a fruit cage, approx 7' tall for the wife's plot, covered in 15mm bird mesh. We're finding deposits of what look like tiny eggs, each patch about the size of a 20p piece on the mesh at varying heights (up to the full 7 feet). Each patch must consist of hundreds of white eggs of tiny dimensions (less that 1mm) tightly packed and bonded onto the mesh. Quite difficult to remove with finger nails, and having done so to see them replaced a week later.

Any clue what these could be?

Moth eggs fer sure. Can't remember the species. It'll come to me ......

Could be lackey moth -- usually lay eggs  round a twig but can be flat patches, and they are out and about in August

Can I chuck the slug egg infested compost in the composter? Usually chuck in old compost as very limited space at home and never fill composter.  Dont want to spread the problem.

Generally slugs in compost help the process along, so I would go ahead  :) :)

If you spread the compost out in the sun  the slug eggs will be destroyed. You can then add it to your compost heap.

Why are you scraping the eggs off the mesh if you do not know what they are? Could be a freindly predator of pests or something like a harmless moth as suggested.

The eggs would generally be damaged as they were rubbed off and so would not hatch
