A different oregano?
« on: August 08, 2011, 12:14 »
My seed sown greek oregano, in the herb bed has been smothered with tiny white flowers and happy bees this year :)
I've just noticed that one of the plants that went in the flowerbed, all from the same seed packet, has smaller leaves, but bigger pretty pink flowers. The leaves aren't such a strong flavour either.

Would this be marjoram?

Almost certainly marjoram.  Just had a look at mine as I grow both.
Cheese makes everything better.

Marjoram and oregano are the same thing. :)
They are members of the same plant family but not exactly the same thing.  I tend to call the larger leaved oregano and the smaller leaved marjoram just to help differentiate them.

Marjoram and oregano are the same thing. :)
That's like saying all brassicas genus are the same :nowink:
I agree with Ice, same family...but it's a different herb and seen growing together they are quite different in appearance ;)

The oregano I grew from seed was greek oregano Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum small leaves and very small white flowers.
The other one has bigger pretty pink flowers and a milder taste and sweeter smell.........after a wander around Jekka's Herb Farm (on-line) I suspect it is pot marjoram Origanum onites
