Mouldy terracotta pots
« on: July 31, 2011, 12:34 »
I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place but here it goes anyway.I've got some lovely terracotta pots that I've planted up with herbs to put on the windowsil in the house. They're really lovely and handy to have in the kitchen but the only problem is the pots keep getting mouldy on the outside and I mean mouldy .Really big fury ,woolly grey mould. It isn't what you want in the kitchen really so does anybody know why it is happening and how I can stop it.I have thought of wipeing them with a bit of diluted jeyes fluid but I think my wife would go a bit loopy with the smell and who would blame her.Any other better ideas would be greatly appreciated

try a drop of household bleach just be careful not to get it on the plants.

Next time they're empty give them a good clean with Jeyes

If they're going mouldy, are they in the shade? If so, herbs generally need to be in full sun and perhaps the kitchen is too warm and humid and as terracotta pots are porous, this would encourage mould formation. I would suggest decorative ceramic pots for inside or put your pots outside on the outside windowsill.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

No their in full sun goosegirl and the warm kitchen is really makeing the basil grow well and as we use so much of it it's a real plus haveing it in the kitchen.I'll try a wipe with bleach and if that doesn't work i'll maybe try a clear varnish on the outside .The terracotta looks really rustic in the kitchen,a bit like myself :D

Be wary of wiping with bleach because the pots are porous and it could leach inside to the soil. Clear varnish sounds better and will help to keep the moisture in.

If the outside of the pot is growing moulds it must be too wet.
