Whitefly
« on: July 26, 2011, 15:41 »
I have just returned to my patch after a few days away, and, my swede plants are covered in whitefly. Are they beyond repair or can the flies be got rid of ?
Thanks
Paul

bug clear for veg will kill them, if u have any marigolds in teh garden transplant them next to the swede and it will repel them.

I cannot see that product on the licensed pesticide database, RW.

What is its active ingredient? Or its MAFF number?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Excellent  :)

One of my friends was here over the weekend, and he works with the people who are redeveloping the HSE / pesticides website.  I have already made my feelings known about the standard of the search facility, and this is just another example  :D

Yes they do, but work best in the greenhouse or under nets.
I assume its because the smell is more concentrated, not blown away by wind.

forgot to add, my brassicas and marigolds are underneath enviromesh.
the whitefly can get thru the mesh, but the marigolds make them leave again, altho why i dont know.

Their smell is concentrated under the mesh, as Terry said  :D

do you plant the small, single french marigolds or the big double flowered ones?

I usually plant the small single ones in the greenhouse border, but my grandaughte got me some big double seeds for my birthday....and they really do pong!
cos of the size I only grew a few :D

We grew masses of the large double flowered ones -- bigger than I thought tbh.

They make great cut flowers
