red mite help
« on: July 13, 2011, 19:51 »
Please can anyone help I have an infestation of red mite. First time I have had them, I have tried various powders and sprays.I have stripped down house and sanitised it. my birds look slightly better and are laying better although still have bald patches - is that normal and how long does it normally take them to recover?
Any advice on getting rid of them would be greatly received aswell?

what powders and sprays have you used?
Staffies are softer than you think.

completely empty the coop (burn or double bag the bedding) then clean out (but not on the ground where your coop is kept if possible). When dry use either poultry shield or ficam w and then finish off with a diatomaceous earth slurry (type that into the search box at the top and you will find hillfooters recipe). Repeat this weekly until you are sure you have eradicated them.
does your coop have a felt roof? If so then this is a hiding place for mites and it needs removing and replacing with onduline.

hi i don't have felt roof, it is covered with a green plastic which is stuck on i have looked round edges and they don't seem to be any there, I am struggling to get them out of nest boxes. I do have two houses attached to pen so have closed this one off as the other one seems fairly clear am still treating it regular through.
One of my girls seems to have lost alot of feathers from rear end and still looks quite red is this normal?
