onions again - when to plant
« on: September 15, 2007, 17:26 »
hi,

My site shed has ordered in onion sets. I didn't think at the time, so I can't ask them, but why would they get sets now? Aren't sets planted in spring???
I have 200 white sets and 200 red.

Not winter (aka Japanese) onions. They'll be going in about now for early summer harvesting. They'll tide you over whilst the summer onions grow.

However, they do not store well after harvesting, and I think 400 may be too many!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

400 is ok for sets if they summer onions  for a small plot holder i put in a few more than that .expect to lose 10% through blow and thick necks when it comes to storage  :) i still have onions in store when the summer ones are coming on to bulb up .i just wish i could get em to go on after the sumer ones are harvested and drying ,i usually end up with no onions for about 4 weeks in summer ,but if you make them up with spring onions ur sorted

OK. Wasn't sure. Didn't realise japanese onions can be red! they aren't labelled, just loose in bags

I have just received my autumn onion sets from Thompson & Morgan. I ordered Shakespeare, which are British autumn onions as opposed to Japanese varieties and are supposed to store a lot better. We shall see! :)

So much to do, but so little time.

I have planted some winter onions (White lisbon, winter hardy) and japanese onions, both from seed. have come well and are at crook stage and a bit further.  Do they need protection from frost?

I had the same misery this year, and as I am a notorious allium addict, I was suffering big ones. All that for not getting around to do me winter onions, have me excuses, i was moving plots, nevertheless, that's just what me winter and welsh onions are there for, to cove that gap.
Love you, gobs
