White fly on my brassicas
« on: July 05, 2011, 21:38 »
Any body out there have any good ideas of getting the white fly from my brassicas? Is soapy water a good idea?
Thanks, Dave

I have this problem every year and have tried the soapy water method before with no success :(...they seem to fly around until it dries and land back on the leaves :nowink:

i thought i had stumbled on a great idea recently and hung up a few of those old fashioned fly catcher papers within my brassica cage, hoping that they would all stick to that, but have had a rethink and am worrying that all the 'nice' bugs could get caught up on them too so may have to take them down 'pronto' when i visit tomorrow.  i will let you know what i find on the sticky papers tomorrow ::)

what does everyone else do?

Marigolds are working for me. Planted them between the brassicas and so far trouble free. The row I didn't put marigolds in appear to be beginning to suffer from whitefly.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

I have white fly on mine, not in any great numbers though.
What harm do they do?

They make a  mess of your produce, but not directly.

They secrect "honeydew" and on this sticky substance a black sooty mold grows, which can make a right mess.

They're very difficult to get out of the folds of veg, although if you close your eyes, you can't taste them.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I can't have anything like that, my OH is a little cautious about eating the leafy stuff as it is due to a catapillar and a slug on one of the girls plates (2 seperate occations).

I'm having this problem as well :(  Wish I had tried the marigold method but at the time of planting no one would have convinced me white fly could cause a problem on brassicas!!

My other problem is that there seems to be loads (one on each plant or more...) ladybirds on them to, which I obv. do not want to kill!  This has put me off spraying them or trying the yellow sticky traps.

I plant marigold amongst my brassicas but it doesn't keep all white fly off, so also use soapy water.
This year plant my kale under a fine net curtain because these seem to be the worst effected.
