Hi Guys im just putting a raised bed in the lotty for strawberries and wondered what type to put i really would like big ones   any ideas.

Well, size isn't everything as they say but I planted some 'Florence' last year (pot grown so probably a year old at that point) and they've given me a fantastic crop of excellent tasting and mostly large fruit this year. I had so many from only six plants that I even made a jar of jam! (Lots of brownie points from the missus).

Florence came out as the winner in a vote on a Hugh Fernley-Whittingstall strawberry festival on the TV last year - that's why I bought them. I've now planted some Albion too to extend the season a bit.

I bought Irresistible on DD's recommendation last year and they are very vigorous plants with decent sized berries.

Our favourites are "honeoye", they taste good (maybe not great), big fruit in early June. These are good early allrounders, good size plants, sending out plenty of runners, they also keep reasonably well, in case you get a glut.

Bear in mind that the size is also dependent on watering and feeding!
