my allotment - pictures attached on a link
« on: July 02, 2011, 16:46 »

the pictures are pretty much the same and not much too look at now.

the ground is mainly grassy reeds, last winter a lot of this part got quite waterlogged so trenches and drainage have been dug into the area and there is work going on there all the time.

the plot itself i would say is about 25ft square ish give or take a few feet.

i will have to strim the 'reeds' down and the mow it i think and then im thinking black plastic to cover it and work bit by bit.

the positives are  it has full sun for the entire day, the neighbouring allotmenters are so friendly everyone made me feel so welcome.

im so excited, any tips would be most appreciated

Link doesn't work.  Hover pointer over the photo then left click on IMG code.  Then right click under text and paste the photo. :)

I`d dig those rushes out using a mattock or azada.

i thought what i would do is, strim it all down, then mow it if needed, cover it with black plastic and work on it a bit at a time.

the allotment site did get flooded last year and they have put a lot of drainage in since then, your man at the site seemed to think it would be ok from now?

im also going to put down eventually bark chipping walkways and raised beds as well as the chicken coop.

do you think the fact it has been waterlogged is going to cause a problem, the rushes i can deal with and get out but im going to have to think about my plan of action as to what i do.  having said all of the above my friend did have chickens down here last year, his coop is just infront of my plot and it was very muddy but not unmanageable.

Thats how we attacked our new allotment.......black plastic over the weeds, after digging out the nasties and then put horse manure under the plastic as we collected it from the stables. It worked a treat, the worms almost dug the soil for us,I only tickled the top the following year.
You might have a bit of a fight with that grass though,we have some on ours ,but you can win!!

Good luck with the hard work.My advice, get a good bed to have some quality rest in at night !

Has the drainage been done correctly, using pipes and backfilled with gravel? If so you should be OK. Obviously during wet periods the ground will take a while to drain.
