How do caulifowers work?
« on: July 01, 2011, 14:00 »
I planted some caulis last November and they are now quite big plants with lots of leaf. However they look like cabbages - ie they have leafy hearts. At what stahge does the bit you eat appear?

and before you ask - yes I am certain that they are caulis. :)

Regards, WG ???

We ate the caulis we planted last October in April!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

.... a photo might help?

If they aren't hearting up or haven't done so, there is something wrong or they are indeed not cauliflowers. :)

I suspect DD is breaking the bad news to you gently - that it is not looking good. I planted mine around March and they already have a small but recognisable curd in the middle. Unfortunately the birds pecked a lot of leafage away so they have really slowed down now. I must sort out a brassica cage for next year. If yours has nothing in the centre then I agree with Argyllie.

We've had a couple of stories of seed mix up somewhere in the chain recently, so if you thought they were caulis and aren't this could explain it. We've only grown caulis once, as I didn't really rate the outcome as worthwhile and like bigben from a spring planting they were doing something, maybe not much, but something by now....

I must point out that it wasn't a fantastic harvest though - had 6 out of about 20 caulis make it through the winter.

I planted 12 plants  April and like yourself I have lovely leaves, only had one to eat so far there is no sign of any curds coming on the rest, but I have not given up on them yet, the one we have eaten was really big and white and tasty.

No curds on any of mine either which were planted in April
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

You left them too long.

They're now preparing a nice yellow flower display for you, before going to seed!

got plenty of curds about 6 inches across, just too many at once should have staggered them.i just dug some lime into the soil around each plant and growmore buried under the plant when planted out, right or wrong it worked for me :D
