Cucumber - Small and Dumpy
« on: June 30, 2011, 07:45 »
Hi All,

Just a quick question really.

My cucumbers are in grow bags in a plastic tyoe green house.

The plants are growing well and producing fruit.

However, the 1st 5 or 6 cucumbers are quite small and dumpy. About 150mm long by about 60mm wide.
There really juicy and tastey, so not a problem in that department - just for knowledge in  case i'm doing something incorrectly really.

Any ideas ???

Some varieties are small and dumpy. What are they?

They have the advantage that one is just enough so you always have them fresh off the plant.

Check the type.
I grow this type because each one is big enough for a meal with no waste, unlike the larger ones with half having to be kept in the fridge for later use.
They usually produce that many that I still have to give some away.

Is the cucino tasty? Do you grow it outside/ under glass? Sounds like a good one for limited space.

I grew dumpy cucumbers inside and out last year, both produced well. Put some more in this year.

Crystal Lemon for example climbs only to about 4 feet, but that's classed as a bush for cukes. You can let them go around in circles though...
