Cockerel acting like a broody hen ?!?
« on: June 26, 2011, 21:31 »
Hi everyone, Leeroy the Leghorn has been acting rarther strangely recently.

I have caught him in nest boxes shuffling around straw to seemingly make a 'nest' and he has also been picking up food and doing the broody mum 'rosey' noise and dropping it for the hens.

I have a brrody hen and 6 3 week old chicks at the moment and until two weeks ago had another broody pen in the main run with a broody and 3 chicks.

Could this have something to do with his behaviour ?

He realy has me confused and amused :D

Absolutely nothing to worry about with Leeroy. He is just behaving like a good husband. All the cockerels I've had over the years have done this kind of behaviour. All he is doing is showing his girls what  delight it is to be his companion and what a wonderful place he has arranged for them to lay their eggs. I think it is the sweetest thing to watch a cockerel do this it just shows what attentive and caring husbands they really are. I've often found my cockerel settled down outside a hen house keeping the hen inside company while she lays her egg.

Good lad Leeroy.

Judging by the size of that comb it was a `sudden rush of blood` to the head. :)

Most impressive head gear!
