Is this curly top virus?
« on: June 26, 2011, 09:03 »
Down on our allotment all my tomato plants are looking really sick. All the leaves are twisted with purple veins and there is no new growth or fruits. I have checked everyone elses tomatoes and they have the same problem.

Has our allotment been hit by the leaf beet hopper and do we have curly top virus? Has anyone else seen these problems this year?

Thanks

Mark

Welcome to the forums Mark, I've moved this to the more suitable GYO forum. Sorry your first post is about a problem.

If you can take a photo, that would help enormously.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Have you used any manure on the beds or for feeding?

They are all in pots. I have been feeding them with Tomatorite after first trusses set. I have now added some bone meal. Looking at other greenhouses on the allotment, they also appear to have the same problem, even over a hundred metres away.

http://wci.colostate.edu/shtml/tomato.curly.top.shtml gives some piccies of what you refer to.

I've not heard of it before and there are quite a few things which can cause leaf rolling.  Sometimes it can be due to heat, particularly in a greenhouse which I think you said yours was in?

DD Realfood asked whether you had all used manure - possible source of herbicide contamination.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They are grown in compost bought from a local supplier. They were looking very healthy until a few weeks ago. Today they seem a little better so maybe the bone meal is helping. Could this also be from overwatering? I am holding off on watering to see if they perk up.
