I sowed 2 rows of carrots about 3 weeks ago.  Not a single carrot shoot has come up although lots of weeds have in that time.  One of the allotment neighbours looked also just in case I had mistaken the seedlings for weeds and he couldn't see any either.

So, any suggestions or do I just go and sow anopther batch and try again?

I had similar problems. Planted in the first week of April and saw nothing until about 3 weeks ago. Until then, just tons of weeds.

You might just need to wait a bit longer.

I had the same problem years ago

but was told by an older gardener to sow carrot seed
if rain is promised within 24 hours

I sowed two rows of carrots down the lottie- different types- one came up fine, the other not a sign!!  I've resowed now.  I also sowed some at home and just literally put them on the surface of the soil and most of them came up.  Some are still coming up a month later.

Who knows what happened to the row at the lottie though!  Tooo deep is my guess

I had the same problem with sparodic germination and have now switched production to the black supermarket flower buckets. I use a 50/50 mix of sieved soil and compost and keep the surface moist with a water spray. Germination is usually 2-3 weeks. I don't expect to have any slug damage either. I am currently harvesting early nantes which are 4-5" long. Need to keep them watered because of the dry weather.

Incidentally I learnt from my local Asda store that they have changed their policy and are now returning the flower buckets.
