Potatoes flowering
« on: June 15, 2011, 21:26 »
We planted some
First Earlies - Lady Crystal
Second Earlies - Pentland Javalin
Main Crop - Desiree

all at the same time in March and have found that the Desiree have larger foliage and flowers  whilst the rest have lower foliage and no sign of flowers.

Does this mean the main crop potatoes are going to be ready before the rest?

Nope - as has been mentioned recently, some don't flower at all.

For maincrop to need to leave them to go full term - i.e. when the foliage dies down. With the earlies, you may have some useable "new" spuds now. Have a furtle.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

The British Potato Council define PJ as a first early also.

(So do JBA & Dundry Nurseries).

My PJs didn't flower but I've been eating them for the last couple of weeks ;) don't ever remember them flowering

I always start looking after they've been in for 12 weeks anyway

A few of my pentland javelins have blackleg so I'm lifting them now. The diseased ones are being disposed of but about 90% of them are good. They haven't flowered but I'm getting a decent crop.

2nd year of growing Lady Chrystl and as far as I am aware, this variety does not flower.

I have been waiting for my LC to flower, is that wrong? I am sure some one told me what colour flowers they had  ???

When folk say start furtling at 12 weeks is that from when you plant them or when they first appear? There must be a considerable difference according to whether they are chitted or not.

My Vivaldi and Mayan Gold have only just appeared after 3 weeks (unchitted). How many weeks should I wait from now?

furtling 12 weeks after planting is usual for earlies which have usually been chitted  :)
