Potato plants collapsed from rain help!
« on: June 14, 2011, 08:30 »
Hello all, I hope you can help me with my problem. I'm growing potatoes in a potato bag and they have been growing wonderfully, healthy and strong. I covered the shoots up until I reached the top of the bag and they've been busy growing away ever since. But I went out yesterday after heavy rain on Sunday and they've all fallen over. I guess because they were tall and the rain just clattered them down. Now I don't know what to do, leave them and keep watering? Support them? Trim them back so they aren't so heavy?

I'd really appreciate any advice, thank you!

If they are so well grown, maybe it is time to dig them out?
I am growing potatoes for the first time. First earlies were planted 2nd April and I have been digging them for a week. Good clean potatoes, many small would no doubt grow bigger but they are very tasty right now.

Potatoes grown conventionally do the same but they just rest on the ground and against each other. If you can prop them up a bit to stop the stems cracking it would help bot don't try to keep them upright. Continue with watering.

Just leave them untill you want them, as long as they are still growing.

Oh thank you everyone that's really reassuring! They definitely aren't ready to dig up, no flowers yet. I'll prop them up and keep going. Thanks so much!

Mine have done the same this year due to high winds and heavy rain, although they look a mess they are fine. I have used two bags worth but will leave the rest a while longer.
