Broody 4/5 weeks help
« on: June 11, 2011, 20:27 »
My buff rock has been broody for approx 4/5 weeks now.  I have tried locking her out of the nest box in the house, put her in a dog cage but she is still not showing any signs of coming out of it.  She is not sitting on any eggs but has all the signs of being broody - she was the same last year when she went broody on me but it only lasted about 3/4 weeks.  If I have her out she seems to behave fairly normally but is drinking quite a lot and not really eating.  She will happily eat corn and the grass but is not interested in the layers pellets.  I made some pellets into a mash yesterday and she ate a reasonable amount but was less interested today.  She has loose motions which are quite watery at the edge of them - I presume that is because of the water she is drinking and not enough food.   I let them out free ranging yesterday and she seemed fine as she is when in the run.  As soon as the pop hole is opened she is rushing up the ramp rosey as she goes in.  Any thoughts on what else I could try?

if you truly want to snap you hen out of it place her bum in Cold water place her in the broody cage up on bricks with food and water in a safe place out of the rain and leave her in it for a week.

My husband i used this on our hens and it works a treat

always works for me (and the longest I have to do this is 1 week), otherwise you just have to leave her to it and it can take at least 6 weeks for her to snap out of it  :(

Thank you both for your replies.  I was gtting worried she was broody for so long!  I will have a go with the cage.  She was in the cage but on the grass.  I have a large sheet of rigid white plastic over the top which overhangs as well so she is protected from the sun and rain.  Do you put her back in the house at night with the others?  Many thanks.

you can do either - I do just in case our local mink come calling which although I know can't get to her I feel it unfair to put her through being terrorised. Then early in the morning I plonk mine back into the cage - giving her no chance to get into the nest box.
