cauliflower surprise
« on: June 08, 2011, 18:15 »
I sowed some early caulis in the greenhouse, kept them potted until the weather was kinder and then planted them out.
The bed had a small amount of compost rotovated in, and BFB a few days before planting.
More recently they had a dose of chicken pellets, and have been watered weekly through the dry spell.
I looked at them today to see that they have perfect white heads on them, ready for picking - so I did  :)

The surprise was that the biggest was only 3 inches across!
Anybody know why

Ha - ha - beat you!

I've had some 1" across this year, 3 out of my first planting decided to come very early. I think in my case they'd got a bit pot-bound when tied up with other family matters.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Sell them to Waitrose - they charge a fortune for ridiculously small veg!

Gives me a good laugh as I walk past them to get to the 'Free From' section!

Is your feeding a bit high on Nitrogen MoS?

I know Brassicas like that, but dunno if it helps to easy off the "N" closer to cropping time for Caulis

I don't really know, I've never grown them before  :D

The chicken pellets were in response to the plants looking a bit peaky, which i put down to all the tap water they'd been getting  :(
