Frogs on the march...
« on: June 06, 2011, 23:19 »
Mrs Growster and I were taking the dog around The Bedgebury Pinetum today, and again spotted the tiny frogs, hopping across in search of the lake!

We saw thousands of them (yes, thousands) last year, and they are minute little creatures, not much more than half an inch, and probably destined for very little life either, but we do have to tread very, very carefully...

I'm not sure if I've ever heard of them doing this, but they seem to come from several yards away!

Were they hoping or walking?

Daft question I suspect but I was wondering if they might be toads.

They could well be Learner, they are so small that we just can't tell!

They just 'get across', and probably they're hopping yes...

I'm perfectly willing to change the titel to 'Toads on the march', of course, how can we find out?

Frogs hop. Toads walk

I'm no sure which you would be most likely to see marching along together at this time of year. Frogs tend to go their own way around here.  ;)

In known frog/toad areas you can often see people helping then across busy roads by placing them in buckets then releasing them over the other side  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

More likely to be toads - they showed thousands of toads starting on their march last night on Springwatch. You could tell that they were toads even though they were small as they already had the warty skin.

June seems late for toads to be making their way to ponds/water. Perhaps it's young ones making their way..... somewhere else.

Either way... lucky people who get to see them as they are so rare around here now that houses stand on the land that was once their home.  :(

I think it may be the dry spell we've had recently Learner.

It rained early Monday morning, and they started to move then. The same happened last year too!

So, toads they are - bless...!

My froglets are moving out at the moment. I have never seen froglets moving en-masse, but have seen many hundreds of young toads leaving ponds. :)

A few years ago our local school put posters up to warn drivers about the migrating frogs, eventually the local authority put up a permanent one :D

Unfortunately they wouldn't stand a chance on our local roads.... even the cats have only 6 lives here.  :(

They seem to be coming from an area where this no water at all!

It's all a bit strange...

My son is in Florida at the moment on honeymoon and they have discovered alligators crossing the roads - wouldn't fancy trying to assist those

I wonder if they have 'gatter-crossings and places where they can stop for a jaw?

Im one of those people lol. I trawl up and down a lane for half a mile at a time, turning round at the end then going up again. I do it for about 90 mins stopping when I see one and quickley getting out of the car to move it. Sometimes I stop near nettles so I pop the toads on my knee and drive a bit further on to a better spot !!
Oh for those halcyon days of England long ago
