It sounds as if Dick has clay - he says, "the lumps of grass/soil (which are like blocks of concrete" so maybe that's why, in this very dry season, he considered letting a rotovator do the digging.

Fair point then - I didn't make the effort to check back on the first post!

As the ground is like that, I wouldn't suggest trying to dig or fork it out, as bits will always break off inside the lumps.

I'd go for weedkiller and pray for sufficient rain to make the ground more workable in the next couple of weeks.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

DD suggested "Reslova 24". I tried it on an old compost heap / bonfire site that I have been attempting to get completely cleared of couch grass for a couple of years but lost!

One spraying and the lot is brown and crisp. All I have to do is trim the brown bits off and fork over. Brilliant!!

Give is a go Dick.  ;)

never tried the resolva type, it was my understanding its just a "contact" killer and doesnt kill the roots.
So its sort of chemical hoeing...
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

I use Glyphosate consentrate from Wilkinsons.
Is resolva24 better than that?

Not so, it contains both Glyphosate & Diquat. The Diquat kills on contact, whilst the Glyphosate works on the roots. You get the best of both worlds.

Only in that you see results of the top growth in 24 hrs. Some nettles I did went black in less than that and never came back.

As DD said, and I'm sure obvious, but it means you can see where you've been after 24/48 hours - rather than waiting a fortnight to "re-spray the bits you missed" if you use just Glyphosate

Does the diquat affect the effectiveness of the glyphosate, given that the glyphosate needs to be sprayed on green material that is actively growing in order to carried down into the root system? I would have guessed that killing off the top growth would prevent the glyphosate making it down into the roots.

I tied the digging it out approach and the never let it see a sunday approach and failed miserably.  Resolva 24h is excellent stuff and my chemical warfare is working a treat.  It weakens the bindweed quickly and while it's writhing around in agony I apply some more and maybe even a third dose.

When a new bit pops its head above the turret I let it grow a bit and either spray or paint it on with a small brush if its too near to other plants.  Gone from beds full of it to just the odd problem in a few months.  Werks fer me. :)

It's quicker to spray than discuss it all day!  ::)
