Is this a sign of going broody?
« on: May 30, 2011, 12:09 »
Hi all,
Over the last few days we have noticed some absolutly enormous poos, not sure who the culprit is, but wondering is this a sign that one or more are going broody?
Thanks in advance

Well it could be.  If hens go broody they come out once a day and to an enormous stinky pooh.  Check to see if any of your girls are stuck in the nesting box flattened out or puffed up.  They can also be very cranky when they are broody!  :)

If one of your hens is broody you will need to decide whether to let her sit on fertile eggs or try to break the broodiness.

If you want to put eggs under her she will need separate accommodation with food and water.  You will need to make sure, by turfing her off the nest once or twice a day, that she gets food and water or she could starve herself.  You will also need to decide what to do about any cockerels that hatch out.

If you want to break the broodiness there are several measures that you can take.  If you type anti-broody measures into the search box in the top right-hand corner you will find some suggestions.  Some of them sound uncomfortable for the hen; however she will not eat or drink enough while broody and can put the other hens of laying.  If she is not going to sit on fertile eggs it is best to try and stop the broodiness.
