moving asparagus
« on: May 27, 2011, 21:09 »
We have got asparagus growing through a rose bush in our front garden.  I would like to move it onto our vegetable plot.  when is the best time to dig it up?  How and where will it be happiest? It has gone to seed - doe"s this matter?

Somehow mark the area where the asparagus plant is, and wait until late fall when both go dormant. To move one now will certainly damage the other. It doesn't matter that the asparagus has 'gone to seed' as that is what it naturally does once picking stops or the young plants progress.

Once all foliage dies off from both the rose and asparagus, dig wider than your asparagus markers as the roots will already be spreading. It's okay to chop off some ends but you don't want to lose the parts closest to the crown. Dig out a largish rootball (to suit the size of the plant) and move to its new hole which you've already prepared. Try not to damage too much of the rose roots.

Be sure to fill in soil for the rose. If you have it, mycorhyzzal bacteria, a root stimulating fungus is a good idea to sprinkle around the rose roots so new growth can bound forward in spring with no setbacks. Water rose and asparagus well, and let them alone.
