New Chicken Coop needs treatment
« on: May 21, 2011, 16:12 »
Hi

I have just had my new (and 1st) chicken coop delievered.  It is now built and the instructions given stated that it has been treated with an animal friendly base coat of wood preservative. This is only a base coat and will last up to three months after purchase. They strongly recommend that I treat my coop with a high quality varnish or wood preservative as soon as possible.

So I went to B&Q today and the sales assistant said that varnish isn't pet friendly and I should be using Teak Oil.

I don't seem to be able to find any advice on the internet to tell me if Teak Oil is safe to use on my chicken coop.

Can anyone advise me on this?

Thanks
Clare

hi.
I'd just get some Cuprinol wood preserver from a builders merchant, but ask for the water based one as there are two kinds out at the mo. The one you want has got a white cap on it, if it's a green cap it's the spirit based one.  :)

They reckon if its bat friendly, its okay for chooks.  I always worry about preservatives in cse the chooks peck at the coop, which ours do sometimes.

But surely doing it with teak oil would be very expensive?  Never heard that one myself.
