Overwintering young perennial flowers
« on: May 19, 2011, 07:57 »
I want to grow some perennial flowers from seed so I have flowers next year.  Unfortunately I probably won't have room in the garden this autumn.  Can I just pot them on and overwinter in the greenhouse?

Cheese makes everything better.

I agree completely with Lesley.  Sometimes, if I can find a bit of space.  I knock up a little cold frame, with whatever I have got lying around, and put them out in that.  If it gets very very cold you can wrap some straw or torn up newspaper amongst the pots.  Good Luck Ice,  regards,  Mrs Bouquet

Thank you, I do have a cold frame that needs a little tlc hanging around.  With prices at my local garden centre at over £6 per mature plant I will save a bundle. :)

If they're hardy (and most are) I just tuck them away round the side of the house on a shelving rack and they've all got through this nasty winter without any protection.
Penstemon, globe thistle, pinks, perennial wallflower, Iceland poppies, Verbena Bonariensis, all good sized plants ready to go in.
Saved a packet!

So do they still need water through the winter or do they just dry out if under cover.
I don't really get this growing flower lark.

yes they need watering, but just enough to keep them alive - don't keep them soaking wet. They'll just die.  :(

When the weather starts to warm up, then give them a feed and start watering a little more  :)
