potting on ..... or sow into position ????
« on: May 15, 2011, 16:12 »
 :)
Ok i'm a real novice veg plot gardener in my 2nd growing season.  Last year was good but this year i want to be better but think i have got a little ahead of myself.

I've an average sized garden which i've cut into 2 and the top is my fast growing veg plot.

Well to cut a very long story short a few weeks ago i had sown some swede seeds into a tray as there wasn't a confirmed spot in either of my raised veg beds at the time.  Today i've spent over an hour carefully repotting each little seedling into a slightly bigger pot......

Have i just wasted my time and damaged the root....... hense why they should be sown into the position they are to be grown  :(

please help  ::)

Don't know but welcome to the site  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

People tell me I'm daft sowing peas in loads and loads of paper pots. I think it's best to do what ever you want to do and not worry about what everyone else thinks.

I'd probably sow swede direct into the ground (if I could find the packet) but grew my parsnip in paper pots successfully.

Anyway... have fun and welcome to the site.  ;)

I know the packet suggests direct sowing but i had equally good results when i transplanted (very carefully). See which works best and stick with that.

Always thankful for advice!

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

There aren't any silly questions on this site  :D

Someone else will always not know the answer and probably be secretly quite glad it was asked!

Useful sources of info if you ever want to do a bit of research though, are the Growing Help link at the top of the page under the main banner, the search facility, and the FAQs sub-board in Grow Your Own, which contains links to answers to / suggestions for common issues.

I think, if the need arises, it would be better to sow your swede into paper pots, rather than a seed tray, and thin after germination to one per pot.
Then you don't have to (possibly) damage the roots on transplanting, as you plant the whole thing paper pot and rootball :)

I just love sitting still and making the pots of a late winter evening.  ;)

I've started my sweede in modules after reading a thread somewhere on here.
http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=76415.msg864356#msg864356

I have started a lot of things off in modules this year and my results thus far have been a big improvement on my throw seeds at the ground approach of previous years.
Please be patient! Learner gardener - allow plenty of room when passing!

Yes, I always find I get far better germination and a stronger, healthier plant if I start off in pots/trays rather than sowing direct, gives them a really good head start. If I was planting a huge amount then I guess it wouldn't be practical, but for the amount I do I'd rather have a bit more work and a stronger plant. About the only things I sow direct these days are the fast grow salad stuff, so lettuce, spring onion, radish, but that's about it.

"I just love sitting still and making the pots of a late winter evening. "

It is relaxing isn't it Learner!

I've got another one for you - we had a fireside rug which nobody liked, and it turned out to be woven from fibres which are even better and stronger than garden string!

I reckon there's about half a mile left to unravel...

My great-aunt made "knitted" rugs years ago from rags. They lasted and lasted.  :)

I use very thinly sliced old tights (not mine!) to tie up tomatoes. They are so soft and stretchy that they don't damage the plants at all. My mother cuts them into strips when the tomato growing season comes along.  :)

I sow as much as I can into pots and modules.  I think the results are better and you only put out strong healthy plants.  With space at a premium I can always clear away the last crop and prepare the soil for the next crop to go in immediately.  In fact this last weekend I cleared out the last of my spring greens and the french bean row now stands there with beans a good 12 inches tall.  So I reckon to get more out of limited space this way.

Also its a hobby and I enjoy doing it this way
